AEO vs SEO for B2B SaaS: what actually differs, and what doesn’t
For B2B SaaS, AEO is mostly SEO with a different scoreboard. Google says its AI features run on the same ranking systems, and well-ranked, crawlable pages still matter. What differs: ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity use other crawlers and indexes, many don’t run JavaScript, third-party mentions weigh heavily, and success is how often you’re named, not a rank.
What this page is. AEOLedger sells answer engine optimization services, so we have an interest here too. Every factual claim below links to its source, each source’s commercial interest is noted, and where good evidence points the other way, it sits next to the claim.
The short version
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank and earn the click | Be named and described accurately in the answer |
| Unit of success | Position, clicks, click-through rate | Named in X of N runs, share of voice, cited sources[1] |
| Index and crawler | Googlebot and Bingbot | Also OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot via Brave, PerplexityBot[2][3] |
| JavaScript | Googlebot renders it | Most non-Google AI crawlers don’t execute it[4] |
| Ranking signal | Relevance, quality, links | Same for Google’s AI features[5]; elsewhere, retrieval relevance and position in context[6] |
| Off-site signals | Backlinks | Brand mentions correlate more strongly than backlinks[7] |
| Content format | A page per query | Answer first; comparison and alternatives pages; no need to chunk |
| Measurement | Rank tracker | Repeated runs with sample sizes; no stable rank |
| Traffic outcome | Organic visits | Small referral share (0.3–1% of visits); influence shows up as direct and branded visits[8][9] |
| Timeline | Weeks to months | Weeks for search-based answers; model updates for memory-based ones |
What stays the same
Google’s own position
Google’s May 2026 guide to its generative AI features says plainly: “The best practices for SEO continue to be relevant.” AI Overviews and AI Mode use Google’s core ranking and quality systems, with retrieval and query fan-out on top.[5]
Crawlable, fast, accurate pages
Every assistant has to fetch and parse your page before it can use it. Clean URLs, sitemaps, canonical tags, fast responses and correct facts serve both.
Authority still correlates
In SE Ranking’s study of 216,524 pages, the number of referring domains was the strongest predictor of ChatGPT citations: sites with up to 2,500 referring domains averaged 1.6–1.8 citations, against 8.4 for sites with more than 350,000.[10] In Ahrefs’ data, brand mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility more strongly than backlinks did.[7] Both are correlations; big sites publish more of everything.
Myths Google explicitly rejects
Google’s guide says you don’t need new machine-readable files (its Search doesn’t use llms.txt), there’s “no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces”, structured data “isn’t required for generative AI search”, and seeking inauthentic mentions is unlikely to help.[5]
What actually differs
Different crawlers and indexes
Google’s guide covers Google only. ChatGPT search uses OpenAI’s own crawler and partner search providers,[2] Claude’s web search uses Brave,[3] and Perplexity runs its own crawler. Each must be allowed in robots.txt and through your CDN, and each has its own index you may or may not be in.
JavaScript rendering
Googlebot renders JavaScript. The crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, ByteDance and Perplexity didn’t, in Vercel and MERJ’s measurements.[4] SaaS marketing sites built as single-page apps can rank on Google and still look empty to ChatGPT’s crawler. That’s rarely on an SEO audit checklist.
Ranking well isn’t enough, even on Google
In Ahrefs’ March 2026 data, only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top-10 results for the query; 31.0% ranked beyond position 100.[11] The GEO survey reports URL overlap between Google’s organic results, AI Overviews and Gemini of only 0.11–0.18.[6]
Contrary evidence: Ahrefs’ July 2025 study found 76% of top-cited AI Overview pages ranked in the top 10.[12] Ahrefs attributes the drop to broader query fan-out but also changed its method, so the two figures aren’t like-for-like.
Mentions over links
Branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview brand visibility at 0.664, branded anchors at 0.527 and backlinks at 0.218 in Ahrefs’ 75,000-brand study.[7] Across engines, the most-cited domains are community and review sites: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia and G2 sit in Peec’s top ten.[13]
The answer is a list, not a page of links
There’s no position 1 to hold. ChatGPT and Google’s AI search returned the same brand list under 1% of the time in SparkToro and Gumshoe’s study.[1] The useful measure is how often you’re named across repeated runs.
Answer-first structure, without over-rewriting
Pages that state the answer in the first lines are easier to quote. But rewriting pages for AI can backfire: in one benchmark, body-only rewrites cut top-10 presence after reranking by 16%.[6]
Traffic reality check
AI referrals are still small
AI platforms sent 0.32% of visits across 101,574 sites in early 2026, and Google organic sent about 134 times more.[8] Conductor measured 1.08% across 13,770 US domains, and 2.8% in the IT sector.[9]
But research starts in chat
In G2’s March 2026 survey, 51% of B2B software buyers said they start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google, up from 29% a year earlier, and 69% said a chatbot led them to a different vendor than they’d planned.[14] G2 sells review presence and the figures are self-reported.
Both can be true. A buyer can shortlist in ChatGPT and then arrive on your site by typing your name, which shows up as direct or branded traffic, not as an AI referral. Ask “how did you hear about us?” on demo forms.
AI summaries reduce clicks on Google
Pew found Google users clicked a result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on about 1%.[15] Those were consumer searches, but the direction matters for SaaS too.
AEO, GEO, LLMO: one goal, several names
Answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO) and LLM optimization (LLMO) are used interchangeably. GEO is the term most academic papers use. We say AEO because buyers ask assistants a question and get one answer back. Watch out for one collision: in trade and customs, AEO means Authorised Economic Operator, which is unrelated.
What this means for a seed to Series B SaaS budget
If SEO foundations are broken, fix those first
Indexing errors, slow pages, thin pricing and feature pages and missing comparisons hurt you in both. Fixing them is the cheapest AI visibility work there is.
AI-specific work that SEO agencies usually skip
- Allowing AI search crawlers through robots.txt, the CDN and the firewall, separately from training crawlers.
- Server-rendering pricing, features, docs and comparisons so non-rendering crawlers can read them.
- Measuring with repeated runs per assistant instead of a rank tracker.
- Mapping the third-party sources assistants cite in your category, and getting accurately represented there.
When you don’t need an AEO agency
If your category is tiny, you’re already named in nearly every answer, or your buyers don’t compare vendors before buying, a good SEO partner and a quarterly self-check are enough. The measurement guide shows how to run that check yourself.
KPIs side by side
| SEO | AEO |
|---|---|
| Rank per keyword | Named in X of N runs, per prompt and per assistant |
| Organic clicks and CTR | Share of voice against named competitors |
| Backlinks and referring domains | Cited-source map: which domains assistants rely on |
| Organic conversions | AI referrals in analytics (a floor), self-reported attribution, branded search |

Questions
Is AEO just SEO rebranded?
Largely, for Google’s AI features: Google says so in its May 2026 guide. Less so for ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, which use their own crawlers or other indexes and often can’t read JavaScript-rendered content.
Does ranking on Google get me into ChatGPT?
It helps but doesn’t guarantee it. ChatGPT search doesn’t use Google’s index, and even Google’s AI Overviews cited top-10 pages only about 38% of the time in Ahrefs’ March 2026 data.
Do backlinks matter for AI answers?
They correlate, but brand mentions correlate more strongly: 0.664 against 0.218 for backlinks in Ahrefs’ 75,000-brand study. Neither proves causation.
Is SEO dead?
No. Google organic still sends far more visits than all AI assistants combined: about 134 times more in SE Ranking’s 2026 data.
Can my SEO agency do AEO?
If it checks AI crawler access, server rendering and third-party sources, and measures with repeated runs, yes. Ask how they measure ChatGPT visibility. “Rank” is the wrong answer.
What is GEO?
Generative engine optimization: the academic term for the same goal. A July 2026 survey of 45 GEO studies found no technique with a stable cross-platform effect.
Should a startup do AEO before SEO?
No. Do the shared foundations first, then the AI-specific checks.
